Mill 2 from the summit. Ski conditions are coming together in the Bitterroot. |
I was able to wrangle Jeffrey and Conor into joining for a day of yo-yo skiing on Mill point in the Bitterroot. With a stated goal of skiing 10,000 vertical feet, we stuck to simple Tag Alder laps. We dug a full pit which indicated stable conditions, but still stuck to low angle terrain out of respect for the heavy snow load over the previous few days. It was great to get a bunch of powder skiing in and enjoy the immaculate weather. By moving steadily all day, we were able to hit the elevation mark without getting too tired. Coverage on the exit was surprisingly good, and we arrived back at the car pleasantly tired just before dark.
I am fairly confident we found the most efficient approach to Mill point. The Bitterroot route description page has been updated.
From the trailhead, walk or skin straight South off trail through the forest just below the base of the mountain for about a mile (15 - 30 minutes). Shortly after crossing a series of dry draws, one will see private land and a few houses. Begin climbing here, giving the houses a wide birth. You should be able to get onto a road prism which climbs up onto the lower flanks of the mountain. Take the road prism until it peters out, passing a decrepit shack along the way. As the road peters out just continue climbing straight west to the summit of Mill Point. It is also possible to approach from Blodgett Creek, but that approach takes longer, and the drive is more difficult in winter.
